Portland, Oregon-areas temp workers lost 1,600 jobs last month, according to state figures that placed the Rose City's unemployment rate at 6.9 percent.
The city's jobless rate, up from September's 5.8 percent, is the highest since 2004, when the region was emerging from a recession. But it's lower than the 7.3 percent in October.
The temporary-help industry lost 1,600 jobs in October as companies prepared for the current recession. Temp workers, who accounted for more than half of the 2,800 jobs lost in the
professional and business services sector, are usually the first to go when firings become necessary.
The retail trade dropped 600 jobs in October, to 109,000. Employment in
construction, leisure and hospitality, financial activities and trade, transportation and utilities also shrank. Manufacturing lost 2,200 jobs, but 1,200 of those were Boeing jobs that have returned now that the strike against the aircraft manufacturer is over.
Education and health services gained 2,700 jobs.
