Ninety-three people lost their jobs last week at the Mountaineer Casino, Racetrack & Resort in Chester, Ohio.
CEO Bob Griffin said the layoffs are needed to ensure Mountaineer remains competitive in difficult economic times.
The cuts, four percent of Mountaineer's work force, leave 2,076 people on the payroll.
Competition from Pennsylvania's new slot parlors, high gas prices and the faltering economy have taken a bite out of the casino's business.
While third quarter numbers showed gains in table gaming revenue, this was largely offset by lower revenue from slots operations.
Table gaming had been seen as an economic lifeline that would ensure the track's survival in an increasingly competitive market, but that was before soaring gas prices and tight credit market sent the nation's economy into a tailspin in recent weeks.
