The number of workers affected by mass layoffs in Central Florida in 2008 has risen 207 percent, and experts believe layoffs will worsen before the economy begins to recover.

Through November 6th, nearly 6,200 workers in Orange, Lake, Osceola, Seminole, Brevard and Volusia counties lost their jobs.

That’s compared with 2,000 local job losses through the same period in 2007.

The numbers are recorded under Florida’s Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification Act, which requires companies to notify the state of layoffs of 50 or more people.

On a statewide basis, job losses rose nearly 54 percent, going from about 17,000 to roughly 26,200. This year’s losses include a statewide loss of 5,131 jobs from grocery chain Albertson’s.
