Traditionally during the holiday season musicians and those in the performing arts are able to pick up a significant portion of their annual income with several back to back performances of shows like Handel's "Messiah" and Tchaikovsky's "Nutcracker."
But this year, with the current economic slump, performers are finding it increasingly harder to find work. Michael Kaiser, president of the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts in Washington, D.C. said "There's great pressure in arts organizations to justify their existence during this kind of economic downturn."
This year, ticket sales have plummeted and donations have slowed as wary Americans cut spending. Corporations that were formally able to make significant contributions to the arts are often no longer able to leaving many jobless as some organizations cancel productions for this year.
