Auto painting works have been found to be an enjoyable part time job to some men who have a passion in art and painting. The job involves removing old paint; masking or recovering surfaces not to be painted such as the chrome trim, and preparing the surface for new paint. After you’ve got the car taped off, you then apply new paint to the surface and apply a finishing coat and then polish the car’s surface. If necessary, when you’re painting a car you may have to remove the chrome, windshields, mirrors, and other accessories that you can’t tape off well enough.

With this part time job, in most cases they are assisted by on-the-job trainees known as automotive painter helpers. These individuals perform the same tasks, beginning with the simplest, and taking on more difficult ones with the passage of time. In either job, auto painters either perform mini-touch-ups or repaint an entire car.

The skill of applying paint to beautify, protect or cover is one of man’s oldest accomplishments. More than 10,000 years ago, cave dwellers covered the walls of their caves with paintings. As civilization progressed, so did the use of paint. It has been employed for religious, educational, artistic, and utilitarian purposes. Paint is a universal medium that is highly valued though often taken for granted.

In modern times, the expansion of the painting profession has been tied to technological developments. Hence, its part time customer service jobs have been rapidly increasing in demand. These have both made paint available in large quantities and opened up new opportunities for those in the trade. In the mid and late nineteenth century, the invention of new machines allowed manufactures to mass produce paint. The introduction of the automobile around the turn of the twentieth century created the automobile painter occupation. Auto painting is a highly skilled, labor intensive job that requires a fine yew and an attention to detail. Jobs are available in auto repair shops, dealerships, or with organizations that maintain and repair their own motor vehicle fleets. Likewise, there are two general types of auto painting. Both can employ the use of a brush and / or paint sprayers. When you are doing touch-up work to a car you have to mix paints to make a color as close to the original car color as possible because you’re only painting a part of the car and not the whole thing.

Whether in touch-ups or in the painting of a whole automobile, the first step is to hand and power sand the surface to remove any original paint and rust. Any small nicks or scratches are filled with body putty. Parts that are not to be painted, like chrome trim, windows, headlights, and mirrors, are removed or masked by the painter or a helper. Once the car is prepared for painting, several coats of primer are applied with a sprayer. Vehicles with metal bodies require lacquer. Those with plastic ones are sprayed with acrylic enamel. In either case, the auto painter must fine-tune the spraying nozzle, adjusting it for the kind of paint used. All these things are part of its part time careers.

Moreover, the air-pressure regulator also must be correctly adjusted. If the paint is not applied properly, it may run or spread too thickly. Between each coat of primer, the car is dried. Usually this takes place in a special infrared oven or under heat lamps to speed the process. After drying, auto painters sand the surface to remove any irregularities. This also helps the next coat to adhere better. Lacquer primers are finally sanded by hand with fine grade sandpaper. The final sanding is not necessary for acrylic enamel primers. After the last coat of paint has dried, the auto painter or a helper may polish the vehicle.

To do car painting as a part time job, good health, keen eyesight, a steady hand, and a good sense of color are needed by auto painters. A high-school diploma is an advantage but is not required. At high-schools, vocational schools, and junior or community college levels, courses in automobile body repair, auto painting, and refinishing should be taken by prospective painters. On -the-job training is the prime requisite for becoming an auto painter or with just a part time employment. Usually applicants start as helpers working with experienced painters. In a certain period of time, helpers undertake tasks of increasing complexity until they become painters in their own right. Apprenticeships are also available in some auto shops, and specialized departments relating to its skills development and trainings. In addition to learning painting skills, participants are taught shop safety practices, color blending, and the proper use of equipment. Either preparation track-on-the-job training or an apprenticeship program - is an acceptable method of meeting the requirements for becoming an automotive painter. Both within and outside the shop, auto painters have significant opportunities for advancement.
