America is a sports obsessed nation having every level of competition for viewing and participation. Some of the participants at local levels would love to expand their involvement by making sports their career. Becoming a paid athlete or finding a coaching job can often seem like an overwhelming or unrealistic goal because it is hard to know how to break into the field. The chances of becoming a professional athlete may be beyond many people's reach but there are many opportunities in communities across America and the world to find at least part time employment in sports as a coach, official, or instructor. There are openings in amateur or educational settings in the athletics department. There are coaching jobs out there both for full time and part time employment you just need to know the facts.

What Does a Coaching Job Entail and How to find One

Coaches help to organize amateur or professional athletes by teaching them the ins and outs of team and individual sports. They help athletes train for upcoming competition by organizing practice session that will help the athletes improve their technique, skills, and form. It is also part of a coach’s job to teach the athletes to have a competitive spirit but always maintain good sportsmanship and teamwork.

Coaches are responsible for developing a strategy for success and to determine what techniques will give them the upper hand over opponents. In team sports, the coach decides which players will be most effective in the game and where they will be positioned. Often the coach scouts the talent out that is on the team by attending other teams’ games of both the same level of sport and junior levels to find the best team players available.
A coaching job usually also means you are in charge of selecting, distributing, maintaining and storing all equipment and supplies used. They will often research new training techniques and aids, adding them to the development strategy for the athletes on their team.
There is often a great deal of travel involved in coaching due to games and competitions away from home, training sessions out of the area and scouting new talent.
Work hours are usually irregular due to game and practice schedules. This is not a nine- to-five job and it is often a hard career to break in to due to the intense popularity of the field. There are many part-time employment opportunities out there but they may be very part time.

The educational and training qualifications required for a coaching job varies greatly depending on the sport, level of competition, area, and venue. Obviously, a strong knowledge of the specific sport is needed for any success as a coach. Often, this knowledge is gained as an athlete while competing in school, or recreational organizations.
In most academic settings, such as public secondary high school, the coaching job is done by teachers who are teaching other subjects at the institution. There are times however, that a suitable instructor is not found on staff and they will hire an outside coach. An entry-level position at this type of venue often requires personal experience in the sport and a strong base knowledge of the rules of the game.
At bigger schools, where sports perhaps receive more attention, there are Head coaches who oversee the team’s development and training plan for the year. These positions are usually given to someone with at minimum a bachelor degree and a winning record with coaching lower level sports.
Private institutions and college level teams will usually require specified training at a university level. There are many degrees that are considered advantageous to have if seeking high level coaching jobs. Acceptable degree programs include exercise and sports science, physiology, kinesiology, nutrition and fitness, physical education, and sports medicine.
According to the department of labor, there were over 217 000 coaches and scouts employed in the United States in 2006. Nearly half of those positions were for part-time employment. Often the pay and time spent coaching is so erratic because of the few games officiated in a year and seasons lasting only a few months that coaches will not even consider it part-time employment so this number could realistically be much larger. 47 percent held jobs in public and private educational services

The five metropolitan areas that have the greatest concentration of coaching jobs, according to the labor dept. are:
Lawton OK
Yakima WA
Muncie IN
Missoula MT
Lawrence KS

However, these are not the top paying areas in America. The five top paying cities for a coaching job are:
Columbia MO
Corvallis OR
Tallahassee FL
Gainesville FL
Winston-Salem NC

The National Association for Sports Officials suggests that for junior level sports coaching information you contact your local YMCA or YWCA and your local Parks or Recreations department. For High School level sports, it is suggested that you contact your state high school association for the local requirements to qualify for a coaching job in their state. A list of these associations can be found at the NASO website http://www.naso.org/BeOfficial/.www.icoachusa.com is a great spot to find a coaching job. At present, they have a job board exclusively for coaches that has over 2200 openings listed. I Coach USA has free registration and you can look through information on coaching, job opportunities nationwide and find links that are relevant to the profession. Whether you are looking for full time or part time employment as a coach, they probably have the coaching job you are looking for listed.

It is also a good idea when searching for a specific coaching job in a specific sport to look up the local association for that sport either on line or in the phone book. They will have suggestion on the qualifications needed, where to get them and how to land the full or part-time employment.

What I liked about the service is that it had such a comprehensive collection of jobs! I was using a number of sites previously and this took up so much time, but in joining EmploymentCrossing, I was able to stop going from site to site and was able to find everything I needed on EmploymentCrossing.
